Granite Countertops FAQ:
Should I use marble or granite for my kitchen countertops?
Because granite is a more dense material than marble, we recommend that granite be used in your kitchen. It’s not affected by acidic liquids, and does not scratch or crack under normal use. Marble is generally used for bathroom vanity tops, tub surrounds or fireplaces, as it is a softer material and will wear a lot quicker.
Is it necessary to seal stone?
Since mineral surfaces are quite porous, they absorb liquids which may result in discoloring and staining. Therefore, we seal all of our stones during fabrication and again during installation. You do not need to seal granite for over ten years but, because marble is a softer material, you may wish to seal it every couple of years.
What are the benefits for using granite as a countertop?
Granite is a natural product with beautiful, original patterns and colours that you will not find in any manufactured countertop, such as quartz. Granite countertops are very dense and do not chip or crack under normal use, and they require little maintenance.
Will granite scratch or burn?
In normal day to day usage, granite countertops will not scratch or burn. You can cut directly on your granite countertop without damaging it. You can also place hot pots and pans from the stove onto the countertop and it will not crack or burn. However, we recommend avoiding this in order to preserve your countertop’s lustre.
How thick is the granite used for countertops?
The granite we use for kitchen countertops is 1 ¼”/3 cm thick. We also stock ¾”/2 cm material that can be used for bathroom vanities or fireplaces.
Where does granite come from?
Granite is quarried all over the world, including Canada, India, Brazil, Italy, and Africa.
Can my granite top be damaged?
Like any solid surface, high impact blows can harm granite. Because of its crystalline structure, it can chip if subjected to sharp hard objects. We do not recommend putting excessive amount of weight on narrow areas of the counter, such as in front of the sink or the cook top, as it may result in cracking.
What is the process of getting countertops?
First, to provide you with an estimate, we will require rough measurements for the countertops as well as the colour you have selected. After we confirm the price, we will schedule a measure date. Once the other components of your project are complete (ie. cabinets etc.), we will come to the job site to get an exact template. When the fabrication is completed, we can then install your countertops.
Does granite pose any health risks?
Granite is a naturally occurring igneous rock. It is possible that any sample of granite may contain varying concentrations of uranium that can produce radon gas. However, the amount of radon gas that is produced is not significant and is not considered a health risk.
